Representatives from two agencies SM and YG announced on November 28, that they would not be releasing their trainees for Mnet’s ‘Produce 101’ that would feature male idol trainees. Their decision was brought about from the fact that the companies believe that there is little to be gained from the competitive show since the companies are already doing a great job in making stars without outside help.

Another source from the industry commented, “SM and YG’s not attending was expected, but JYP Entertainment who enjoyed success with Jeon So Mi is still in talks about their attendance.” He added, “There is some doubt regarding the success of the male version as compared to the female version of the show. The first season was greatly successful, but I hear that it’s not that easy to gather all the 101 male trainees.”

However, it is also reported that the ‘Produce 101’s male version is still in the planning stages. On the month of December, Mnet and various agencies will be negotiating the cast, and the earliest filming will start by January. The first episode is expected to air around February or March of next year.
